DIRECT SCREEN PRINTING:
Ideal for: earthenware; cost effective in both large and small runs; Not for: complex half-tones
An image, usually up to four line colours, is printed within a given area directly onto the rotating body of the mug.
This method is used when:
• the design is simple
• there are no complex half-tones although some half-tones can be directly printed
• the registration is not over demanding
• the design is not required to be larger than the print area
There are limitations with this process and it is primarily used for the low budget side of the earthenware market. A direct printer can print several thousand items a day, in contrast to the slower, hand decorated transfer process.
Ideal for: earthenware and bone china; more complex art tones; critical registration and full colour work; printing on the full surface area of the item; highly-shaped items
The design is silk-screen or litho printed onto special paper, then cover-coated. The resulting print is then treated as a water slide transfer and applied by hand to the ware. The process is slower and more labour intensive than direct screen printing but is more flexible with colours able to be built up with precision and control. Printing is possible on the full size of a mug, inside on the base, as a back stamp, or just inside the rim.
Transfer or litho printing, as opposed to direct silk-screen, is used when:
• larger than average print is needed
• working with bone china
• printing in four-colour process
• cases where more than four line colours, very fine detail or tight registration is required.
PLEASE NOTE DIFFERENCE THAT CAN OCCUR IN SIZING OF CERAMIC MUGS:
All ceramic mugs can vary from batch to batch this is due to the nature of the clay. You can have shrinkage in drying and firing.
Different clay bodies shrink at different rates. This can be as little as 4% or as high as 15% for some clay bodies. Even a single percentage point can make a dramatic difference in the final product.
All clays shrink. But not all clays are created equal. Different clay bodies experience different amounts of shrinkage. It depends upon the clay’s particle size and on how many and what impurities are present in the clay body.
When clay is wet and very pliable, it contains a great deal of water. The clay particles ride within the water, which makes clay pliable, more easily workable. As the clay dry’s the water evaporates, escaping from the spaces between particles. The particles move closer together, resulting in the entire mug shrinking.
How much the clay shrinks depends on the characteristics of the clay. Shrinkage due to drying is generally between 4 – 10%
When clay is fired at a high temperature, it begins to gradually vitrify. This process of melting and fusing also compact’s the clay body. The clay shrinks as the particle sizes slowly decrease as they fuse. In addition, the particles also compress into a tighter, denser configuration within the glassy material that fills up all the nooks and crannies.
The amount of shrinkage due to firing is very dependent on which type of clay is involved. Shrinking during firing can vary and be to a very low degree or as much as 8%.
